Render Reflections #1

What is art?  Are there certain criteria or rules that an object must meet in order to be considered art?  Very often it seems that art is treated as insular and paradoxical: we devote special instruction to its creation, erect impressive buildings for its display, and spend vast fortunes on its attainment.  And yet, the representation of objective beauty is as elusive as it is alluring.  What one observer may consider to be “whimsical” or “immature” may be deemed “innovative” or “iconoclastic” by a different observer.

Though we may not know quite how to define it, we nevertheless know that “art” is special, and that the ways in which we treat it must also be special.  Nowhere is this special treatment more apparent than in the many museums, galleries, and private exhibits engineered for the specific purpose of presenting artistic objects to observers.  Much like churches and temples, the buildings in which we enshrine art typically encourage solemn meditation and psychological transcendence.  By allowing an observer unconstrained and uninterrupted access to artistic objects, that observer is best able to appreciate those objects as artistic.

Sometimes even artists themselves need similar circumstances in order to properly critique and admire their work, as well as that of their colleagues.  This is no less true in the field of medical animation, where representative accuracy, company branding, and constant deadlines often distract us from the beauty of things that we create.  An occasional pause for contemplation is warranted, and that is our purpose today.  We invite you to join us in pondering the surrounding images, which exemplify the diverse aesthetics of our current projects.
